It should work out fine, if your bank is a normal legitimate bank. Call them anyway to ask, as there might be unwanted surcharges for exchanging the money.

Bank transfer. The money will be transferred in dollars
and converted in the amount and at the time you wish.
The balance will be kept in dollars. Only make sure you
consult an International Bank with a good reputation.
You can go to, let us say, Bank of England only for a
consultation. They will tell you what you can or can‘t
do. Go the foreing exchange department and get
advice. Remember, you can also keep you money
in an off-shore account, let us say in Euros. It is up
to you. Whatever you do, there will be a fee which
is called a "spread" when you decide to go ahead.
Banks do not work for nothing!

The guy in the US can pay you conveniently as follows:
Send you a $ personal cheque on any bank in US, having brances in UK, convenient for you to visit..
Alternatively, send you a bankers draft in UK£ from the above banks in US.
Alternatively, make a bank transfer of UK£ paid to your bank a/c in UK
Alternatively, by Western Union
Which method is cheapest will depend on the amount and countries involved, but you can ask.
An important matter is to agree with your friend in US, on who is to pay the bank charges. If you lent him UK£ here in UK, you can argue that you are entitled to receive the same amount net, here.

Someone I know got an international "Visa" or "Mastercard".
This person applied funds toward the card in one country and then spent them in his/her homeland
