and they asked you to describe a plant or animal to them? How would you describe the object to them? How would you describe the object's colors, shadows, light, movement, texture; all of the attributes of the object so that your blind friend could form a picture of it in their mind?

If they have always been blind, color, hue and tone are meaningless.

well if they had sight before, i would just describe the color. than i would put their hand on the leaf and guide their hand around the edge to show the shape. they would figure out the texture on their own.

if they didn't have sight before, but could see light, i would sa 'color is light, all else is darkness.' it wouldn't be the whole truth, but it would be better than nothing, right?

Just describe the scene the best you can and your friend will understand, you said he was blind ... not stupid. Being a friend is all that's important.

Just tell them how it is. Just treat them the same.
