Go for lightly used. That way, someone else pays the initial depreciation.
Look at the used car price guides and choose a model that holds its value well. The reason it holds its value well is because it's good.
Remember, a few miles per gallon here or there on fuel consumption is nothing compared with capital depreciation and repair bills.
