I have 12 Dwarf Hamsters. First thing you should know is that Dwarves are social creatures, and prefer to be with another. They play with one another. Syrians (golden, teddybear, etc) hamsters are quite the opposite, and should always be in a cage alone.
Dwarves will run anywhere from $8-20, depending on where you get one. Have the store sex them for you. That means have them tell you if you have a boy or a girl. Get a same-sex pair, because dwarves WILL bread (my 12 resulted from accidently getting a brother/sister mix, and not knowing how to "sex" them myself).
Dwarves need a cage that's decent sized. A good cage will cost you about $20-30, and two dwarves can fit in 1 cage just fine. If you want, get one with tube openings, so that you can expand it later on.
Dwarves are very loving little guys, as long as you allow them to get used to you. If they never get used to you, they will nip and bite, and be ornery. Mine all love to be handled, held, and snuggled. They love running around my shoulders, and down my arms.
Dwarves can eat regular hamster food, as well as treats like cucumber slices (remove the skin), shredded carrots, even watermelon from time to time, but treats should be limited to once a week. Too much of a fruit or veggie can make them sick.
They need a wheel to run in, though most cages come with one. They will often run side by side in your wheels.
They require bedding, but it should NOT be Pine or Cedar bedding, as those contain oils harmful to Hamster's tiny lungs. Aspen is much more prefered, but personally, I prefer Carefresh. Carefresh is more paper like, softer, and much more absorbant. It requires changing about once a week or once every 10 days, though spot cleaning helps to keep everything fresh and smelling good. Carefresh and Aspen bedding cost about the same, $3-4 for a small bag, which with 1 cage, will last at least a month, possibly two.
Hope this helps!

I say you will possibly desire to flow with the syrian because of the fact they are larger, less demanding to deal with and are not as quickly. in case you have your heart set on a dwarf, then pick the dwarf yet while it truly is your first hamster, i might strongly propose you to get a syrian. My syrian hamster might each so often basically sit down my hand for as much as love 1min and a half and basically have me puppy her. yet while your getting a hamster then you definately might desire to be waiting for the duty. Even concept hamster are small, they are nonetheless a number of artwork. there is are affliction that;s uncomplicated for hamsters calld moist Tail it is often deadly for hamsters <3R.I.P Macy <3

This question is sorta old but...
I have a dwarf myself, and he is such a good pet! He's only bit me once, and it was my fault. I paid about $15 for him at Petco, about $5 for bedding, maybe $20 for the cage, and $10 for toys and food. So I paid a good $50-$60 for him. He is a very fast runner, so when I take him out, I need to keep and close eye on him. I suggest you get some tubes for your hamster to explore around in, my hamster loves them. Good luck!

I have had friends who have dwaf hamsters I took care of them, and i find that they are VERY aggresive with people. If you try to hold them they will attack you. or that could just be because they weren't handeld properly when babies. and they go for $6 at the pet store.

My friend bought one and I think it was $20 just for the hamster. Not counting the cage, bedding and tons of food that it eats. Also it BITES. Everytime she gets it out of the cage it bites her. And everyone else too. Just get a regular hamster. Your fingers will thank you.
