Having a mid-life career change. Does anyone know about becoming a paralegal in Dallas? Does it pay well? Any ideas on work in that field while you learn? Maybe work that will also pay the school tuition? I already have a BSW.

You would need to find a firm willing to train you or obtain you paralegal certificate (which is usually a two year AS degree -- can take less if you already have some of the course work done). As there is an abundance of people with paralegal degrees, it will be harder to get a position where they are willing to train you. You may be able to get a job in a legal department on a larger company that has tuition reimbursement in order to obtain your degree, but to my knowledge, most lawyers and firms are unwilling to pay for that kind of education.

I'm not sure what the pay scale is like in Dallas, but in Tampa Florida area, a paralegal with no experience: around $25,000 a year.

It pays OK. You could make 25-45K probably. You need to get a paralegal certificate and then start applying at law firms. Jobs can be tough to find but they're out there.
