ur above anwers r either not very accurate or incomplete.
when u break down old red blood cells, u create bilirubin, biliverdin, and other by-products. ur body recycles some bilirubin/biliverdin (which bilirubin itself is red, biliverdin is green), but a lot the waste from breaking down blood cells goes into ur stool. the bacteria will process the waste material and bilirubin/biliverdin creating a brown color. bacteria in ur gut (including e.coli r not brown themselves.) and the one answer about all ur different colored food is bogus...because so much processing/digesting goes on in ur intestines.

(as gross as this is,) the color is brown 1. because of the ecoli (bacteria) in your intestines. 2. because all of the food in your stomach is colored differently. Now, what happens when all of the colors mix together? You get the color brown.

bilirubin
it's kind of a pretty green colour when it's still "chyme" up in your small intestine.
