I don't have my offical textbooks at hand, but I believe it refers to the difference in what makes a person who they are.
Nature refers to the traits they are born with and nurture refers to the traits they acquire throughout life.
For example, if a person is nervous, the nature vs nurture question asks if that person was born nervous, or if they became nervous because of the enviroment (people, situations, etc) they grew up in.
Most people belive that it is a combination of both with varying degrees of each. For example that that person was born a little bit nervous, but their environment throughout their life made them completely nervous.

Some say that behavior is the result of nature, as in what genes you receive from your parents. Others say behavior is a result of how you are raised. This is an argument that has been going on for a very long time.

it was explained to me very simply.

i tend to have a bit of a volatile temper when pushed to far so i will use that as an example.

i was not born angry. i was born - naturally - to be kind loving and gentle towards others. that is my nature.

i was not treated very kindly at different points in my life and therefore learned how to lash out in an effort to protect myself. that is a learned behavior for me - in theory my surroundings nurtured those traits into becoming of who i am.

Nature is referring to inherent qualities, something you are born with, vs nurture, which is something you pick up from your environment. So, what determines who we are? is it DNA or is it our life experiences? It's been debated for years and there isn't really a clear winner.
