One sock got into the wrong pile and still needs to be washed, one sock fell somewhere on the path to being washed, the sock was never there, or sometimes the other sock may get stuck in side the dryer on the vent or even sucked into the vent somehow. Other than that, I don't know.

Small items, such as socks, can be moved up to the top of your washer and dryer and in the the course of the agitation and spinning work themselves over the lip of the tub, where they disappear between the wall of the washer (or dryer) and the tub.

I know this because once when our washer broke down, my husband wanted to take it apart. When he got the tub out, eureka! There were 10 jillion socks! None fit to wear, but still, there they were.

Now I avoid this problem by putting small items to be washed inside a mesh bag and then into the washer. Haven't lost a sock since.

I know what you mean. I am single and live alone so I have complete control over my socks. I usually do my laundry and have no problems whatsoever. I have 2 of every sock and I know what kinds of socks i have. I try to keep it simple. But there have been rare occasions that some sock shows up in the dryer like a stray dog. And what's even more strange is that one of my other socks is missing!!! So it's like the sock fairy goes around taking someoone's sock and sticks it in your dryer but has to take one of your other socks to give to someone else. DAMN THE SOCK FAIRY!!!

The little sock man eats them. That's why I buy all socks the same so I don't have to match them up.

Because sometimes the socks that don't match are in a pile that have already been clean and there fore are wating for the pile int he dryer to be clean to match the other pile that doesn't have a match. The End.

The spinning of the dryer will open up a vortex into a parallel universe which will take one sock from each pair.

I'm convinced there is a black hole in my dryer that occasionally sucks in one of my socks. This black hole also has a tendancy of following me around, taking pens, keys and glasses. I sometimes find them again in totally different places than I would have expected...

all dryers have demons that teleport the socks around the world to other people just to confuse and irritate us
