This question is impossible to answer.
For used cars, the indiviual car - and its previous owner(s) - are far more important than the manufacturer.
Don't touch a Honda in this price range unless you know whether or not the timing belt has been replaced. (Or plan on spending a few hundred dollars to get it changed immediately.)

Ford cars are the best Value. There are enough people infatuated with the Japanese that it keeps prices WAY TOO HIGH on used Japanese cars. For 5000 you can buy a 4 year old Ford Taurus... or a Focus... Depending upon how big a car you need. Either one will be very comfortable, reliable, and fuel efficient. The Japanese cars will cost double that money. to buy Japanese under 5,000 you will be looking at 7-10 year old cars that are about ready for alot of maintenance. For example, all cars on the road eventually need a new starter motor, Water Pump, Air Conditioner Compressor, Timing Belt, etc... And this stuff usually fails between 100-150,000 miles regardless of the make of car.
So you are much better off buying a 4 year old Ford/GM or Chrysler than a 7yr old Jap car.
The Jap stuff got its reputation for reliability versus American cars way back in the early 80s. Nearly everything was junk back then, but the Jap stuff actually ran a long time. Most of this was due to them nearly all being Cheap Simple economy cars with Manual transmissions. Automatic Transmission repairs are what sends most vehicles to the Junkyard outside of crashes.
Think about it...your car is 10 years old...worth about 2 grand and you need a new transmission for 1500 bucks...most of the time the car gets sold for scrap. However, most of the Jap cars were Manuals, and most of the time a Manual transmission will last 2-300,000 miles without need for repair.
However in Todays market all of the car companies build cars that will last a long time.
If you are considering an Asian car apparently you are comfortable with a small car. The Ford Focus is the absolute best value in a used car today. Inexpensive to buy, good looking, reliable, efficient, and they were on Car and Driver magazines 10 best list for 5 years in a row!

Honda and Toyota would be the top picks. Honda tends to be more inexpensive to have to fix while Toyota holds a better resale value

for this reason i do no longer in elementary terms like the ninety 9 down a lot, yet you had each and every possibility to have the motor vehicle inspected until now buying it. in case you probably did no longer purchase a guaranty the sale is as-is. You heavily could have found out that a 12 3 hundred and sixty 5 days previous vehicle with 230k miles is gonna pick somewhat artwork and that it wasn't well worth as much as they charged you, yet having suggested that the place else might desire to you have gotten a motor vehicle with in elementary terms $3 hundred down.

I would prefer Honda or Toyota because they are tougher, reliable and durable. Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic would be some of the cheapest and better cars among their class.

I purchased a 93 Nissan in 2001 it had 115K miles on it and i placed another 75K on it the only thing i had to replace on it was Battery and oil changes later on of my own free choice i up graded the 4 spd manual to a 5 spd
I purchased it for 2500.00 and still own it its a great car to get around in with gas being so high it costs me 30 bucks and it gets 34 mpg @ 65mph
you couldn't go wrong with any Japanese brand auto's trust me.
I wouldn't buy one damn U.S. made auto they fall apart as soon as you pay them off.

Not an expert, but I'd say Toyota. Whenever we had to buy an used car, we got one and we did ok. Also, when we had to sell them, the costumer was happy with what they had.
