The submarine Scripps and La Jolla Canyons 1/4 mile from shore have a depth of 300-400 feet. A mile out where they join, it is 900 feet deep. Once joined, they go out to a depth of 1600 feet.

Whereas, when the canyons aren't, it is 66 feet (20 m) deep about 1 mile from shore.

Two feet off the coast, it is up to your knees. A little farther out, it is way over your head. You could do a Google search for navigational charts.
