I've had Windows based computers forever and always had trouble. If you don't have trouble at first, you will soon. My husband and I both got new Apples about 6 months ago. We LOVE them! We'll never, ever go back to Windows!

Had to add this. I saw the comment that Apples are more expensive and yes the up front cost is higher. But, I spent a $100 a pop taking our Windows computers to be repaired (usually removing spyware that gets into them just by being on the internet). We don't have that problem with our Apples. They are just great! And if you do have a problem Apple has the best tech support of anyone out there. They were rated highest with Consumer Reports and I did call them once and they had me on the line with someone in 5 minutes and solved my problem. I highly recommend Apples.

I have the Mac OSX Tiger. I also purchased a book called Mac OS X Tiger Edition The Missing Manual by David Pogue. It's like my Apple Bible! Apple is different from Windows so I had some questions along the way and this book was indispensable. I still use it for little odd questions that come up. It's never failed me.

As a veteran with almost two decades in technology and more than eight computers in my home alone, I would suggest that computers are not investments, in the most practical sense. Computers are simply tools that quickly become obsolete, have all sorts of problems on a regular basis, and wear out over time.

That being said, I've used both Apple and "non-Apple" computers for years. Stability has far more to do with operating system than hardware, although hardware will always have issues eventually.

Apple OSX is very stable...not 100% stable, but then no widely-supported OS is. I find that it is typically more stable than Windows XP, and bet it will continue to perform admirably compared to Vista (whenever it's released).

Yes, many users find taht Apple computers (Macs) do not freeze up as often as Windows computers do...but you'll still find a price premium to buy a comparably equipped Mac, although the price delta is shrinking all the time.

More to the point, your decision will be driven by what you want to DO with the computer, what applications you want to use, what networks you need to access, etc.

Windows (in its many flavors) still owns the vast, vast majority of market share, and thus has an order of magnitude more applications available for it.

So it all depends on what you want to do with your computer.

Apple is the best - no doubt. It has few viruses targeted at it, it requires very little user action to keep running, it has better OS with less errors [almost NEVER 'freezes'] in it. [have you seen the TV ads over the past few months? they are right!!]

Apple COSTS more, but if you want to worry less about your data, get a MAC.

I just got an apple and it is better than a windows anyday. The system is easy to get used to. In apple you get more easy to use laptops. You can do cool things with them and they are more protected.

Hi,

I currently own three macs (Quicksilver 867, MiniMac and iBook) and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. The operating system is stable, smart, and gets out of your way so that you can work quickly. Things like Spotlight (full system searching) and Expose (neat desktop effects) are just frosting to the already excellent cake.

For me, yes. it is worth it. The prices are roughly comparable to PC's and overall, the hardware is of much higher quality.

Cheers!
