I am a French teacher and am searching for movies to show my students. I cannot show movies that contain sex, nudity, too much foul language, etc., etc. Any suggestions?

Babette's Feast
Jean de Florette
Manon of the Spring (Manon des sources)
Le Château de ma mère (My Mother's Castle)
Le Gloire de mon père (My Father's Glory)

The first two have nothing objectionable at all. Manon of the Spring has a distant scene of a girl bathing in a spring. One of the last two (I'm pretty sure it's My Mother's Castle, but it's been a while) has brief nudity from young boys, so you may want to preview them.

I normally don't care for French films (and my wife has no patience with them since she doesn't speak French and doesn't like subtitles in general), but these are very good ones, and I highly recommend them to you.

Although I haven't see it, Les demoiselles de Rochefort (The Young Girls of Rochefort) is rated G, and has pretty good reviews.

Movies For French Class

That's a very difficult task...most of the French films I can think of have at least one of the above in them. It also depends on the age of the students. What about the Asterix or Tintin movies? Boys always like those. I also like "Vincent et moi". You might want to check it out first, but I don't remember anything too offensive in the Quebecois film "La Grande Seduction"...English title "Seducing Doctor Lewis"...not what it sounds like. Depending on what you are trying to show, there is always the option of using the French track on English DVD's. One of the students I tutor watched Harry Potter in her French class.

Show them Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame in French. Sure, it is elementary, but hey, it *does* take place in France and it is safe-not one parent is going to be upset by you showing it!
Teacher's Discovery has it for sale but nowadays you could just go rent the DVD and select French for the language. If you show it in French with French subtitles they'll be able to catch the most, and for the beginning levels you could show it in French with English subtitles, or vice versa.

A friend of mine used to show her classes "The Little Prince" in French and I'm guessing that was safe.

Les Choristes. The whole of France loved this film about a boys' choir when it first came out.
