We're taking a vacation to Vancouver Island BC in end of Sept early Oct and are looking for recomendations on accomodations, sights, activities and eats. We're considering spliting time between Tofino and Salt Springs Island. We have a 5 yo daughter and enjoy outdoor activities.

I hope you are expecting expensive. Tofino is just that. But it is a great place to visit.

Things to do is the easy part. Explore the coastline of Pacific Rim National Park. It is usually windy, cool, and the end of September could bring rain, so dress warm. But there is lots of room for a 5 yr old to run around on the beach and discover things. There is lots of hiking, you can probably find some shorter trails. Tofino has more than its share of shopping, mostly gift shops and galleries.

If a storm hits, I suggest lunch at the Wickaninnish Inn. Their restaurant is built so you will feel like you are right out in the middle of the storm. Even brings you into the middle of the rolling waves on a clam day. But it is an expensive gourmet lunch.

Half the hotels are outside of town along the waterfront. You pay for the view. Then there are more motels in town. If that waterfront view interests you I suggest the Best Western Tin wis. It has a upper end motel feel to it that might fit in better with a child. Ground floor rooms have a patio door opening onto a grassy field and then onto the beach of a cove. I have stayed there about 3 times, as well as 2 other hotels.

Travel Alert Edit!! - Tofino just ran out of drinking water! I would check with your hotel immediately. Many hotels will be trucking water in, but they might not be taking new reservations. And who knows how long it will last....

One thing you need to be prepared for is that Tofino can be alot colder and damper than the more protected Gulf Islands. You will want to bring warm clothes (preferably layers) and rain gear. The rugged beauty of the area is wonderful to see.
