for her it was a couple days later on Valentine's day and how did he almost die? Was it the bus and him looking at her from across the street and she saved him by writing him in a mailbox that goes back in time 2 years saying wait for me so he didn't jump the gun and get hit by that bus? Damn. this movie reminds me of my life. My online love, my girlfriend, wanted me to wait two years before seeing her. I didnt' exactly keep my hands clean but I kept talking to her and we finally met it's been the end of three years now. I'm in love with her but I'm trying to get over her because we can't be together because we're too different. I wonder what happens if the story continued... This should be categorized in movies and relationships.

Quickly, I need to read the rest of the question and then I'll process it....he DID know her at the party, she didn't know him. He couldn't tell her he knew her because she didn't know about him- didn't know about the future or the overlap like he did, and would think he was crazy. He also knew her at the train station, but she didn't know him....only later did she realize who he was and what it was all about. If I recall correctly, the moment she realized it was him at the party was when she was lunching with her friend.

To be honest, I'm still trying to process the end of the film myself! I only saw it once and should probably see it again.

The key to understanding it is parallel universes. When they were supposed to meet for dinner and he didn't show up, that was one universe he'd already left- he didn't meet her for dinner and he was dead by the time she went to the architect. That was the universe that depressed her and made her pull away. But it was also the universe that made her realize his fate- being hit by the bus, and helped her to change his fate. Somewhere in there he realized (I think he realized that only being dead would prevent him from showing up for dinner) he missed something and rushed back to the Lakehouse and went digging in the box. Somehow he put it together to wait for her and not cross the street. I can't recall, it all happened so fast. ;) We know she sent him the warning, but was it in the box when he rushed back? Nobody lived there between him and her. Was it a new letter in the mailbox he found when he rushed back?

What people didnt understand is that their time periods always overlapped. They did meet at that party where he kissed her but didnt know it was her till after. He is the one at the beginning of the movie gets hit by the bus and she tries to save him but he dies. She realizes this and sends him a letter to wait two years so that they could be in the same place at the same tiime.
