Yes- once it settles into place the IUD is virtually unnoticeable.
I too had too many side-effects with the pill, so I got the IUD in April '05.
Discuss this option with your Ob/Gyn since IUDs are typically recommended for women that are done having babies. There are risks, although nowhere near what they used to be.
Good luck with the baby and your decision!!

I had an IUD after the birth of my twins, and it was awesome. It took less than 5 minutes to be put into place by my Ob/gyn. My periods were really light & lasted only 2 to 3 days. I didn't have to worry about getting pregnant at all. I do admit that I removed my own my own (though you are not suppose to). I pulled on the strings (kinda hard) and it came out. It is hard to reach, so I'd advise not to do so. When mine did come out, I had a period a week or so later, and my periods were off a bit. Either being a couple days early or late. My IUD came out in January, and I got pregnant in May. IUD's are the best option, and are very hassle free!

the iud is differnt for every one i too had to use it because of the no hormones thing. after i had my 3rd son they gave me the depo and i reacted very badly to it. i gained 25lbs in two weeks because of the chemical reactions! (and was told it would take up to 4 years for all the effects to wear off.)
so i went with the IUD i had it for 3 years and did OK on it
i hated it because what it basicly does is gives you a abortion each month to keep you from having a baby. (it prevents the cervix from closing to hold the baby in.) so just as soon as possible i had it removed. and am now happily after a year of trying finaly preg again.
with me and some women (not all) it causes your period to be extra long and heavy. and can throw it off a bit to where its not regular anymore.
and the cramps can be killer.(but some women dont have any ill side effects from the IUD)
find the right doctor to put it in and make sure they know what they are doing cause if they do it wrong puting it in or taking it out they can scar your insides and even puncture your uterus so make sure you pick the right one. and have it removed every 5 years regardless. if you want to keep it longer have a new one put in every 5 years.
AND make sure you make sure they put the non hormonal one in you. (there are ones with hormones)
i hardly noticed it was there sept for my longer heaver periods. and i didnt have a baby during the time i had it in (thou my husbands little brother was conceived while their mom had one 20 years ago {but shes weird anyway})

My wife used it for several years. Three to be exact. She never experienced pain or any type of problems whatsoever, and I never even noticed it there.
Now, be advised that, this method is very efficient, as long as no one (the couple) plays "hanky panky" with other people.
Recent studies and a very reputable IUD designer and producer states that couples that are unfaithful increase significantly the risk of having the IUD fail.

I have had one for a year and a half. So far so good!
Just so you know, for me, my periods were messed up for quite a while. At first there is some cramping for a few months, not bad, just now and then.
I have liked it a lot, I don't have to think about anything. Mine is in for 5 years but there is a 10 year one also.

I absolutely LOVE my IUD. I don't have to think about it, the hormones don't make me crazy, and I don't get pregnant.
The best part is that with a Mirena, hormones are released into your uterus (don't go throughout your body) and it thins the uterine lining which totally gets rid of cramps and eventually - bleeding! My periods are laughable now!
I highly recommend it!

Well, I had an IUD once too, but, I got cramps from it. So, I got mine taken out. My SIL had hers start to "grow" into her she said, so, she got hers out too. Sorry I couldn't give you any good news about it, but, everybody's body is different. The only way you'll know is to try it yourself, you can always have it removed.

My neighbor said that you do not feel them at all, and that is the only birth control that she will ever use.
