No, it doesn't seem that hard, but you try writing eight sentences about yourself without using those words. then you'll see

This is a very difficult assignment. Those who are making fun of you ought to try it!! Writing a paragraph without using any form of the verb "to be" is hard. BUT, your English teacher is trying to teach you several things. First that relying on forms of the verb "be" is something we do very much in our writing. Second, verbs are the power punching words of a sentence, so by forcing you to use verbs other than "b," she is forcing you to think and choose action words that say more powerfully what it is you are trying to convey. Third, using action verbs makes your writing come alive. Notice how important the verb is in headlines of a newspaper. Example: "Hitler Invades Norway." Or, " The Yankees Destroy the Red Sox." See how important and colorful those verbs are?

I used to give this assignment to my students for years. Hard, but doable. Try it yourself. I commend your teacher. He/she is really teaching you to write!!

From a retired teacher of English for 40 years!!

Good Luck!!

Write a paragraph as you would normally. Repace those words with others having the same meaning. It should not be hard to do. Be creative and you should meet with success.

The paragraph above is an example.

Use "exists" in place of is. "Existed" in place of was, or were. Other examples are "lived. dwelt, took place, occured, happen," etc.

Use other verbs. Its a challenge, but I'm sure you can do it.
She wants you to take out the "being" verbs to expand your ideas.
Think about something you like doing or seeing and write about that.
Good luck!
