Is it constant or does it come and go while your computer is active. If constant, then it is very likely that it is the fan. If it doesn't happen all the time, it could also be a physical problem with the hard drive or CD/DVD drive.

It depends on what you mean by grinding. If it is a constant grinding noise then it is mostly likely a ball bearing fan going out. If it is when you are running programs and such it could be the normal grind like sound that the hard drive makes.

usually.
its probably overheating.
i work for gateway.
you can get a lot of grinding noises because of the nature of the machinery when its retrieving information off of the harddrive.
get it checked out. if its in warranty call the maker of the machine, or else just take it somewhere locally. dont take it anywhere locally if it is still in warranty because if you have a third party work on it while its in warranty it could violate the manufacturer's warranty. ;)
if its all the time its the fan, which isnt a bad thing necessarily it just means its doing its best to keep it at a good temperature. if it happens intermittently when you are doing something that requires a lot of memory or effort like a high demand application it maybe the harddrive. suspect the harddrive if you get a bunch of bootdisk or error messages...

There's something in the fan, maybe too much dust. Sometimes the fan part of the power supply just gets worn out. Replace the power supply and the noise will stop.

A loud grinding noise is usually indicative of your hard drive getting ready to go...
...if it only comes and goes (particularly on start up), then it is probably your fan.
Either way, it's not good and should be looked into...might be time for a new unit...

If it's constant, it's likely the fan. If it only occurs for half a minute or less at a time and stops for long periods, it could be the hard drive.

60% it is one of the fans in your tower and 40% it is one of your drives.(either DVD-ROM or HDD) Solution: Make sure that ALL screws on your fans and drives are tight enough and don't allow any kind of slight movement (also check the screws of your Power Supply Unit).
Make sure that no free jack or cable is in contact with any fan
Make sure that no fan is blowing against another.

probably the fan. usually easily replaceable. Most come with the 'on/off'' switch module/power supply.
