go to a nationwide chain, not a mom and pop jewelry store, because they tend to be more expensive. Sam's Club carries some nice, affordable jewelry and so does Walmart, but Sam's stuff is of better quality.

It also depends on what you consider cheap prices and what you mean by real jewelry.
I bought a sterling silver, Sapphire necklace with very small real diamonds for my mother in law at the above link for $17.50.
Keep in mind the diamonds were small but they were still real.
She loved it and it was a great price (on clearance)
Check out the clearance jewelry first, because they go fast.

try overstock.com or qvc.com. I've found things on both sites that were quite nice. And, yes, there are other items aside from that horrible stuff your Aunt Mabel used to wear.
