I'm 23, graduated from uni with a 2:1 in Languages last summer and am in a complete mess. I've just spent a year in Spain teaching English. Do I go back, is there a future there? Do I do a last minute PGCE here? Neither job appeals to me, but I've applied for hundreds of jobs in the City and am getting nowhere, despite a few interviews. Should I continue this or just give up and do a PGCE? Other options? ARGH!!! I am totally unemployed as well as the mo, which isn't good. Cheers!

Trust me on this

I envy your situation, you have just graduated, you are only 23.
Don't loose it, ok, keep applying. Perseverance is the word.
Don't give up. It is normal, so many people after uni find it hard to get a job. I seen it many times. But if you keep applyng you will get there + you have experience.

Please don't give up, and while you are applying you could try to do short courses at college which will complemet your degree. That would give you an edge over other applicants.

Good Luck, I have faith you will make it.

Doesn't sound like your heart lies in Spain, do you really want the PGCE, is it necessary to your future, if so go for that and maybe teach English on a part-time basis close to home and uni, it will give you a bit of money too, have you thought of moving to another city or area in England, your very intelligent and have a year of teaching English under your belt too, is their another country you would like to teach English in, maybe Australia, new start, new hope and brilliant prospects too, your only 25 and the world is your oyster, do what your heart tells you and follow your dreams, very good luck for your future.

Poor soul. So the world is not your oyster, after all.

Do what I did. Start at the bottom as a labourer, and work your way up. I did, and I've got to fifty with my own house (I owe 30,000 quid, which is peanuts). My pension should click in in two months time, and I have a pleasant job 10 minutes walk from my house. OK, I cannot afford a yacht or a BMW, but I am not stressing either.

Oh, by the way, I got a University qualification too, through the Open University, when I was old enough to know what to do with it. I've also got a gorgeous wife - a few lines here and there but utterly loveable, for ever.

Hello Sam,

I think that what ever you do, at the moment you need to keep busy. So why don't you do some voluntary work. You could contact the Citizens Advise Bureau and ask them how you go about this. They have a web site. If you do this you will look good on your C.V. And it will show you haven't wasted your time. It may also give you a feeling of satisfaction to know you have contributed xx I hope you soon find somthing you like.

Don't waste time doing things you really haven't the heart to do. Go with your heart.
Make lists of the things you like doing, pros and cons. Add them up and see which is the best way forward.
I've changed paths several times (electronics, rag trade and education) and have enjoyed the personal growth through the ups and the downs.
Remember, we all have comfort zones and to really grow we have to step out of them.
Good luck in what ever you decide to do.

What do YOU really WANT to do? Don't let hurdles dictate what you want to do. Once you've decided, then do it, no excuses, no questions, no buts. If it really is something you want, nothing will stand in your way.

If you follow a path that your heart isn't into, you'll be miserable and never feel fulfilled. I ended up going back to college then uni at 30 because I never followed my dream when I was younger... now I finally am doing what I want to do in life. Trust me, start early, know yourself, decide then do it. It means you have many more years to enjoy what you do.
