how ancient?
over a thousand years ago, people were using calendars, or the equivalent of calendars by watching the skies and seasons.
before that, I guess they used notches in bones.
if this is a homework question, it's a badly worded one.

Calenders were popular in "later" ancient history.

The only thing I know of are Sundials and Water clocks.
