if the focus was on 2's the it wouldn't it stand to reason that we would have a pair of bra, right?
just thought i would throw that in there.
more food for thought
we drive on a parkway, park in a driveway
also on cooking directions, why does it say "pre-heat" the oven. why not just simply "heat" the oven. do we heat it before we heat it?
is it not clear that we should'nt put the food in untill the oven has heated, or do food companies think that people cannot follow directons?
similar things; pre-flight boarding. is there such a thing a in-flight boarding? or post-flight boarding?
near-miss. wouldnt that be a hit?
thanks for responding, enjoy the points

I'm responding to all the stupid answers about (not all are stupid, just the majority).
OK first off to pre-heat your oven doesn't make since because your food would not be heated if the oven wasn't already hot unless it was a magical Betty Crocker cake and in that case you wouldn't need to heat your oven. "pre" is to do something before you do something else and you cant cook your food unless the oven is on and already hot. Think about it Pre-heat your oven, or you could say heat your oven up before you heat your food up.
Pre-boarding a flight well you couldn't board it if it was in flight and how would you boarded a plane when you have already landed and your still on it. They should just say board your flight.
Oh there was a answer above that ask why do you turn the lights out and to turn other thing off or something to that point. That comes from when we were still using oil lanterns, you would TURN the wick/flame witch was the LIGHT down until the flame was OUT.

The full name for a bra is actually brasierre. Since a pair would imply 2 the plural of brasierre would be brasierres. Having said that, the same logic does not apply to say a pair of boxer shorts. This would also imply 2 items of boxer short - which clearly is not the case. These issues are common in English and cause frustration to the serious scholar and create amusement and more points for Yahoo Answerers. Thanks for the opportunity to score 2 more points.
While on the subject of mixed messages here are a few others.
Why does it say "In case of fire do not use lift" which implies that you should use the stairs just in case there is a fire instead of "If there is a fire, do not use lift"?
Why does shaving cream say "Shake well before use"? I suspect that it is to ensure that the contents are mixed up properly. Well now, when I have a shave I always give the can a vigorous shake as soon as I am finished shaving to ensure that the can is shaken "well before" I shave the next day. Why then does it drip out in liquid form rather than as a foam?

The word "underwear" can be used as plural and the word bra cannot unless you say "bras"
as "i have a pair of 'bras'"
Pre-heating means heating the oven before you heat the "meal"
One thing is heating the oven another thing is heating the meal

well, we have a pair of pants but A SHIRT...
you heat the oven before you heat the food... and if you've ever heard "here's your sign" by bill engvall you will know why they put those directions on the packages of food.
pre-flight simply means you do it before the flight. (this one actually makes sense).
near-miss-- yeah i don't know--sounds like a hit...
thanks for the points!!!
