I disagree with this statement, and think that many European countries are much more free. If you think that the US is the most free country in the world explain why you think it is please.

Because there's no such thing as a "European" dream. Or and "Asian" dream... or an "African" dream...there's only an "American" dream.

When you come to live in the U.S. , you become an "American"... going over to live in Europe doesn't make one a "European". Moving to Asia doesn't make one an "Asian"... moving to Africa doesn't make one an "African".

I deal with a lot of Europeans in my line of work (banking) ... they come here for six months out of the year, which is the maximum they can stay and still keep their homeland citizenship... they can't believe how easy it is to get things here...supermarkets on every corner... and when they walk into a Super Wal Mart for the first time...forget it!

In the U.S. anyone can move to any town they wish to live in (and can afford)... of course, you're limited all over the world as to what you can afford, that's not just here. You can't do that in the European Union.

Also, people that are considered 'poor' in the U.S. can still suceed in life...it happens all the time...that's how our economy became the strongest in the world..the economic opportunities in the U.S. are literally limitless.

Some of the largest U.S. companies started out as one-or-two men operations... and grew from there.

In Europe and Asia, if you're born poor, chances are you will remain so...there's not nearly the opportunity for economic advancement in those places... I won't even mention Africa in this discussion.

China has over a billion people...there's no reason they shouldn't be kicking the U.S.'s butt economically...but they aren't. Why not? No opportunities there...it's a Communist country.

All you have to do to see which country is the most free in the world is open the borders, and see which way people go.

Plus, we also feed most of the world anyway...in addition to being the first responders to natural disasters anywhere in the world.
Also, the amount of charitable giving in the U.S. dwarfs anything Europe can come up with... Americans are by far the most generous people in the world as well...

The USA says they are one of the most free countries in the world because people in the USA can do just about anything they want. Yes there are some restrictions and some rules to follow. Rules and restrictions aren't always a bad thing. Where else can you sit around and do nothing but complain about your government, and get away unharmed. Where can you marry whoever you want regardless of their race or religion (yes, except for same sex marriages)? Where can you were a shirt saying your president/ruler/government sucks and no one can do a thing because it's your freedom of expression? In the US people can work where ever they want, make movies, be in porn, doctor, lawyer, cop, or be unemployed (oh and the US will give you money until you can find a job, and if you can't then you can just live off of welfare). What other country can you do all of this (and much more)? So yes the US is one of the most free places to live.

Before we provide answers to this question, let's all speak the same language and use the same definitions.

What is a "free country"? Describe and list its features.

Before we can compare we need to know the things that we will be comparing, providing those things are pertinent to the definitions.

Hobbes27, you are arrogant and misinformed if you think the US created Democracy, us Brits did in 1147 or whenever with Magna Carta. The US does not have free health care like Canada or the UK, it has no intellectual freedom, if you dissent from recieved opinion you are a liberal at best and a Commie terrorist sypathiser to boot. You will be called "Un American" the insult of choice for those with narrow mentalities. (Republicans)

To the uninformed jackass above -The US did NOT create democracy. Democracy is, literally, rule by the people (from the Greek demos, "people," and kratos, "rule"). The term is commonly used to describe a form of government in which it is recognized that ultimate authority belongs to the people, who have the right to participate in the decision-making process and to appoint and dismiss their rulers.
What we have in this country is not a democracy. We have an oligarchy. The 'leaders' in the US don't care what the people want or what they have to say about it, thus, The Patriot Act, where if you speak out, you're a traitor. There's precious little anymore that's free about America.

Because they, as used to be the case in Britain, can do anything, save what the law states that they cannot do. Europe is becoming enslaved by a left wing totalitarian regime known as the EU. How can you believe that Europe is more free when the EU is trying to remove the former nation states of Europe and incorporate them into the federal states of europe?

It is ONE of the most free countries. ONE. It offers many oppertunities, and freedom comes in many shapes. Try to remember that you can't just ask for freedom and sit like a lazy person does and expect everything to come your way. YOU MUST WORK FOR FREEDOM!!!

Americans have learnt at school that US is the land of freedom, but they are just unable to explain why.

I feel more free in Europe than in their country of religious zealots with their Patriot Act :)

It depends what you mean by 'free'. This is a very emotive word and can mean whatever you want it to mean. The US is more free than many dictatorships around the world, but also has a political system that means you have to be practically a millionaire to become President.
