Selling out your individual personality is not the way to live, I know from experience and when I went through that little phase.

I think you should like who you are and what you do, even if other people (the jock/cheerleader types) consider you "weird"

It's always easier to "go with the herd" - there is a safety in following the tried and true methods of the majority.

It works for some, but not all.

It takes real guts and initiative to stand up and say "THIS IS WHO I AM" in the face of adversity - but it feels so liberating once you have!

Nothing beats being proud of your indiviudality.

The answer is simple to state and hard to live. All to often people will conform to what society considers normal for a few rather plain reasons. The first is because people fear rejection. Everyone wants to be accepted at one time or another. No one wants to be the outcast. The second is because of peer pressure. The imfamous "everyone is doing it" line. That is where people start living like society wants them to. The third is rather simple. It is that not everyone's normal is the same so people change to conform to what they view is the "average" normal so as not to be one of the rejects of life. Few people go through their whole lives not caring what other people think. At one point or another everyone cares what others think. Even the non-conformists out there should practice monderation. I am a antigay-prolife-antievoulution-prowar-conservatist. I stick out like a sore thumb. But I have learned to get along with my peers and not change my beliefs. And anyone who reads this can rant and rave on how wrong I am and how stupid I am and whatever else that crosses their minds and I won't care. But I do practice moderation in talking to people. I have friends who are pro-choice, I have gay friends. It doesn't mean I agree with them. I have extremely strong beliefs in the opposite direction of them. But I can get along with them and get something done. I don't hold their beliefs against them. So a sore thumb can fit in and get along and accomplish things with others. Does that mean that I will not stand up for my beliefs? Of course I will but only at the proper times. In the end what people don't want to realize is that everyone is "weird" and different. The people who are truely popular are those who care and love and enjoy life and who are themselves. One may be outcast for a while but that is just because others cannot accept that person for who they are. We live in a broken and corrupt world. No one is perfect. Find a few friends and be happy with that. No one is ever as popular as they think. That popular person that so many under dogs dislike is obviously not popular with that crowd. So popular people are only considered popular by the fewthat match closest to he or she's own personality. So live life and learn about life. Live with a passion and do your own thing (as long as it doesn't break the law) and the world will be a happier place.

I agree. For most, it seems an easy route in general and for acceptance. Also, they don't have to think for themselves and just follow along in our dingy traditions and superficial society. I often wonder if these people choose not to be as they are or simply don't know any other way. I try to give the benefit of a doubt but either way their road looks dim.

Social acceptance "Gee that was just too easy"

In some places in the world there are still tribes that are cannibals
(They no longer eat people) but the elders did.

To them that was the "socially acceptable" or "Normal" thing to do.

No one should have to conform to what others consider normal...that is just a matter of opinion and we know about opinions.

some people are born with no guts or spine. In which case they should go for it anyway because there isn't much physical damage you can do.

I trust sailormandave, atheism is logical thought, no longer unfastened thought. unfastened thought is obviously conventional, yet once you have self belief in a god or no longer is your determination. no one is making all persons adjust to something, you label your self based on your ideals.
