Yes, I too can remember my 1st day of school most vividly, even now after, ****** years ago. I don't think I will ever forget it. Pure Chaos! They had put us in a basement classroom; but, because I could see my mother's legs out the window, I was OK - until she left. She stayed for a long time - other kids were crying, screaming, a few actually trying to escape out the door and being dragged back in and becoming hysterical. When I saw my mother walking away, I dragged a chair to the window, got on it and starting jumping, trying to reach the window and crawl out I guess, yelling for my mother not to leave me! When I was pulled off the chair, I ran for the door; but I too was dragged back in. There were 2 or 3 nuns running around, trying to control us. I can still see their faces, and the other kids, so clearly. By the time they had us all in seats and finally under control, most of us still sniffling and crying, I remember looking back at the windows ... and THERE WERE MY MOTHER'S LEGS AGAIN!. She had heard me and come back. I was OK again.

Vividly!
I went at 4 (rather than 3 which was the norm)
After an interesting morning I went home whilst the "babies" were put to sleep in little beds on the schoolroom floor.
The whole day founded my desire for schooling - and thus a good education.
Everyone was so nice and, with the exceptionn of the inevitable bullying in the playground, so were the next 13 years or so.
The second most lasting memory was the smell of urine during assembly!
Perhaps a comparison of primary education today versus some 60 years ago would be illuminating? Who will ask the question?

Whoa, that is such a long time ago now, but yes I do very well, we had to wear a little name tag round our neck on a piece of string so the teacher would know our name, I took mine off and told her I already knew my name so I didn't need to wear mine cause I was a big girl now I was at school, I remember getting a little bottle of milk with a straw and two Royal Scot biscuits after play time and thinking it was brilliant as we rarely got biscuits at home in those days, couldn't understand why I couldn't go home after diner though and cried for most of the afternoon and was I angry the next day when I had to go back and do all the same things over again, I thought I only had to go the one day, thanks for the memories.

Well, I had 1/2 day kindergarten.
I remember crying when I got onto the bus. And I waved to my parents out the window, when I sat in the first seat on the bus.
I remember that when I got to school, I was terrified. We drew trees with foam leaves :D
When I got off the bus at the end of the school day, it was like noon, (from k-2 grade i went to my friends house for lunch, until my parents got home from work, so i got to hang out with her) and my mom was in my friends drive way, along with my friends mom. And I remember running into her arms, happy i got "home". but the best part about it was that I didnt know my mom was going to be there, so I was estatic!
My mom asked me if I wanted to come home with her, or stay with my friend and her mom. I picked my friend to show my mom I was a "big girl" but once my mom left I started to cry, and I was sad. hehe
I remember it perfectly!

Oh yes! I remember it very well!! I was terrified. My sister was in a class a couple above me,and I kept crying because I wanted to be with her! The Nun that was teaching the class was NOT very nice at all. Instead of trying to reassure me that all was going to be ok,she called me to the front of the class, very roughly grabbed my arm, swung me around, lifted my skirt and slapped the back of my legs very hard!!!!! Imagine that happening today!! Needless to say,I just cried even more. In the end she had to get my sister to shut me up." I cried for at least 3 weeks, day in day out!! I have disliked Nuns ever since!!

Yes I can! I remember arriving at 9am and sitting down. I looked at the clock and it was 9.10am, and I remember putting my hand up and asking if it was time to go home yet! lol
The teacher said "go home? You only just got here!" I couldn't believe that we were expected to do more than 10 mins a day.
I remember thinking "my mummy will never manage without me"
Great question! Thanks,
xxx

It was upsetting for mum but hey she saw me 15 mins later cos I escaped across the school field, cut through alleyways and backways and was home on the backdoor step by the time she got in!
