I have a NEC XP17 from 1996. It still works great. Now I'm buying a new PC. I need to decide if I want to get a sleek new monitor in a bundle deal or use the old one. Is it just a matter of having the right cable? Or are their other factors?

Let me ask you: Would you go out and buy a new car and use the same shitty tires you had for 10 years? Or would you want brand new rubber? Buy the bundle and keep the old monitor for a backup. Also monitor cables 10 years ago were not standardized. It has only come within the last couple of years that most computer cables have been interchangable. Most probably that old monitor will need some kind of converter cable to work with the new computer. So stick with new. Pay the extra couple of bucks for the new monitor, it will be cheaper in the long run. To go out and buy a monitor separately will cost you even more money.

Just get the package. After you complete this purchase, you won't be able to buy a monitor this cheap again. And you'll never know how degraded your old monitor is until you see the new one. And while you're at it, make sure you get a flat panel monitor (Liquid Crystal Diode technology). Don't confuse this with a flat screen monitor (pretty much like your old one, except the screen is flat instead of curved). You'll be very happy that you made this upgrade along with your new computer!

You should be able to connect with no problems. The graphics might not be as clear due to the number of Pixles on the monitor, but with the right cable it should work just fine.

I thought "Yes", but a friend of mine bought a new HP tower thinking she would use her old HP monitor, but xp didn't recognize it. She thought it was the new computer and took it back to the retailer. CompUSA plugged one of their monitors in - worked like a charm.

Another friend of hers upgraded his xp from CRT to LCD & gave her the newer CRT. She plugged it into a replacement tower (she has a way w/ salespeople) and it came to life.

My jaw dropped.

nope same stuff but a CRT or tube monitor is harder on your eyes a LCD is much easier to stay on for extended periods. plus they can be a little better in terms of color and contrast

What I would do is just get a bundle deal. Get the whole thing new.
