"What is a dat file?
The dat files contain the latest virus remedies and need to be downloaded on a regular basis in order to keep your virus scan engine updated. CNS will be posting dat files for the most recent viruses on this page so bookmark this page or keep checking back in order to keep your scanning engine updated."

My system tells me this. It may only be in regards to my system, not sure.
DAT is the file extension for Microsoft Exchange Server v 5.0. it is also the file extension for the WordPerfect Merge Data.

it's a data file, usually. there's no real order for the .dat extension, so it could also be a text or graphic file.
check it out: http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=.DAT
I'd recommend taking a look at the file by opening it in Notepad to see if you can get a clue what it is.
