My system tells me this. It may only be in regards to my system, not sure.
DAT is the file extension for Microsoft Exchange Server v 5.0. it is also the file extension for the WordPerfect Merge Data.

it's a data file, usually. there's no real order for the .dat extension, so it could also be a text or graphic file.
check it out: http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=.DAT
I'd recommend taking a look at the file by opening it in Notepad to see if you can get a clue what it is.
