It's important to make certain the house is clean of mold and mildew. Pour vinegar and baking soda down drains to keep them fresh-smelling. Launder your drapes and curtains frequently, since they trap odors, and have your carpets steam-cleaned regularly. Air the house out at least daily by opening the windows and letting fresh air sweep through the rooms. Put dirty laundry in a hamper or laundry bag away from the living areas of the house. You can also simmer a pot on the stove every once in a while with a bit of water and some whole cloves, a cinnamon stick and a vanilla bean or vanilla extract in it (all from the spice aisle in the grocery), but watch it to make sure to add water as needed and don't leave it simmering when you're not home! This mixture makes your house smell really inviting and cozy and both men and women love the smell. The mixture can be reused over and over by just adding water. You can add a bit of orange or lemon peel to the mix, too, to give a nice tangy citrusy aroma that smells clean.

It really depends on what makes it smell bad! If you have pets then the smell is everywhere! You may want to vacuum your furniture and floors as a starter and get up the hair. If you live in the country and it's a smell due to the type of water you have there is really nothing you can do. I have found burning good scented candles works better than febreze and/or other household sprays/air fresheners/plug in's. The other thing I have found to work well is the Glade Candle thing, it's a small candle that come's with it's own holder, they have a nice, long lasting scent!

Those plug in oil heater (Glade, etc.) make the house smell nice. Just make sure you replace them as needed. Leaving them in when there is no oil is a fire hazard. I also have 2 of those wall hanging dispensers that sprays out a scent every 15, 20 or 30 minutes. You set the time. Keep the garbage disposal clean by grinding up a lemon or orange slice every once in a while. I put dryer sheets on the bottom of trash cans before putting a trash bag inside. The carpet foam spray works nice too. Scented candles with the lids kept off of them also smell nice.

Always keep your home clean and well ventilated (if you cook or engage in activities that involve some sort of smell). Also keep a glade plug in in every room and get some heavily scented candles and light one in each room for an hour at least once a day. Use carpet powder every time you vacuum. Buy good quality incense as well.

Clean and disinfect your home...don't be sloppy. Also, candles and those scented oil fans in every rooms of your house will keep things smelling fresh. Not advisable if you have allergies though, as any of those air fresheners that you plug in are pretty potent to the nose!

Something I do is put a small pot of water on the stove...add a little bit of vanilla...the kind you bake with...keep it on low...and it smells like you were baking all day...just make sure the pot doesn't dry up.
