Well, it depends on the product. If I see a crocheted item at the store, I want it to be home/hand made because that is MUCH better than by machine.
I make quilts. A home/hand made quilt can last for over a century. The cheap (but very overpriced) mass-produced quilts you can get at the store will fall apart with just a few washings.
As for things like cars, I don't know if I prefer man or machine. Machines can miss things that the human eye could spot, but at the same time, humans can have a bad day and do a bad job on purpose.
So, I think it totally has to do with the product.

Hand made would imply that more craftsmanship was put into the product than something cranked out by a machine. I would buy something handmade over machine anyday...more care and pride is put into the final product.

Its supposed to mean more special, just like when a friend or family make a gift for you instead of just buying one. The company is just trying to con people in by saying its hand made.

Hand made is better in terms of clothing because personal attention has been paid to the garment. It is a step closer to couture, where each garment is fit to a client, sewn up by hand (basting) then fit again, then sewn, then fit again and then altered and then fit and given to the client. Those garments are created by skilled craftsmen and craftswomen, they are expensive. 500-1000 for a regular dress.

So where do you get the generalization that all people think that way? SOME people may think that because they are old fashioned or think that its "special" if it was home made because someone actually took time and effort to make whatever it is.

i agree, as for homemade prods, brownies, etc people assume that its a specific unique recipe and therefore is special and not generic. A handmade product is original and cannot be replicated as for a machine produced item is identical

I agree - as well as the phrase "home made"
it's entirely up to one's taste if the product works for them, whether handmade or homemade..
