no, the 89 camaro wouldn't have come with a big block. i had an 88 Iroc, came with a 5.7, 350 small block. That was the biggest motor that camaros came with at that time.
J.P., shouldn't it say 402? I've never heard of a 409. 402 is a 396 bored 30 over.
I correct myself on the 409- it was a special production in the 60's, the Beach Boys had a song about it.
Just checked with the local racers, (3 on my block) 427 came in camaros from 67-69
own a 67 camaro-454BB- runs 10:30's

Third and Fourth Generation Camaros (82 - up) unfortunately never were offered with a big block, and if memory serves, you couldn't get a big block in a second generation (70 - 81) past 71. By this point, I believe all that as offered was the de-tuned 396. If you go back to the earlier cars, you could find big blocks, but these days they are mighty expensive. I won't say hard to come by, as anything can be had for a price, but they are getting more and more scarce. My specialty is 1969 Camaros, having owned 3 and been the past president of our local Camaro club for over seven years and a regional director (I guess, titles were not actually bestowed) of the USCC.
I do remember that you could get a 427 in the 69, from the factory, in either cast iron or aluminum. The aluminum blocks are the rarest of the rare 69's, as only 69 of them were produced via a loophole in the GM ordering system, known as C.O.P.O., or Central Office Production Order. The cast blocks were more plentiful, but still very rare.
That being said, you can always find a car that you like and install a big block in it. I've seen them in third gen Camaros. It's a TIGHT fit, but it will fit! Good luck!
409's were 58 to, I think all the way up to 63, full size (Bel Air, Impala) engines, the de-tuned option being the 348. The 409 was replaced by the Mark IV motor, or what we know as the modern big-block engine.

The Big Block Chevy appeared in passenger cars from 1958-1974. The Corvette usually got the most powerful and exotic of the breed. As for the Camaros, factory installed 396 cubic inch big blocks began with the 1967 model and continued through 1969.
Dick Harrell was the first to retrofit a 427 into a Camaro working with Nickey Chevrolet in Chicago. In 1969 through the use of COPO codes, special high performance vehicles were ordered from Chevrolet, mostly by Don Yenko and Joel Rosen.
The last factory big block Camaro was built in 1972.

Camaro never had the 427 engine Corvette did Chevele Did, Impala did. Some had 396 some 409 and some had the RAT 427 And 454 truck motor really isn't in the same league. You really have to go back to the mid 60's to early in 1970 to get real american iron. Smog Killed The RAT

THIS IS WHAT I LIKE TO SEE------PEOPLE WHO KNOW THERE STUFF AND DID THE RESEARCH-----
THEY ARE ALL CORRECT. IF YOU REALLY WANTED A BIG BLOCK, CHECK OUT SUMMIT FOR THE ENGINE SWAP ITEMS; SUCH AS HEADERS MOUNTS AND FRONT STRUTS AND SPRINGS. IT'S A LITTLE TIGHT BUT I GOT MINE TO FIT AND RUN LIKE A BEAST. JUNK YARD SEARCH FOR A BBC AND REDO THE BLOCK WITH A BETTER CAM, DECK THE BLOCK, NICE SET OF HEAD, CARB IT(OR FUEL INJECT), AND SUBFRAME THE CAR. BELIEVE ME....THIS CAR MOVES WITH A BBC. JUST REMEMEBER ABOUT THE TRANS AND REAR.......YOU MAY WANT TO BEEF THEM UP SOON AFTER OR THINGS WILL DETONATE.........TOO MUCH TORQUE.
