Originally all colors came from nature, There are many chemical reactions that make colored compounds that were used in making pigments used in oil paints. Dyes for clothes came from flowers(onion makes yellow) sea shells, minerals, insects and etc. Now dyes are made from organic chemical reactions, and the colors are man made. Many come from petroleum. I would like to see all food colors come from food but they do not. Caramel color is natural, carmine color is natural, most are not.Colors for paints today, oil. acrylic and water colors are made from petroleum.Generally we do not allow petroleum products in food or makeup.

To add to delta's answer, colors can also be made from minerals such as chromium oxide, which is a favorite way to make fir green in spray paint. Colors in fireworks are also minerals.
