If one's definition of "high tech" is the unnecessary additional crud they put in automobiles today (motorized everything, "sports car" SUVs, etc.) that do nothing more than make a statement of status while driving up insurance rates and drinking even more fuel, then we have no bright spot in our traveling future.
GPS and on-board navigation are already a necessary reality. It shouldn't be a stretch for the same technology to soon be capable of making speed adjustments and steps for fuel conservation (as already available in the trucking industry) and other measures to increase economy, safety and efficiency.
Without these steps being taken our drunken consumption of fuel will never abate. Those who were around for the gas crunch of the early 70's remember governmental intervention in the form of lowering speed limits to a nation wide 55 mph. Fuel consumption was scaled back dramatically and the carnage of the nation's highway's death toll was also reduced.
So where are our benefactors now? Without an imposition of a nationwide speed limit, those of us who try to voluntarily take measures to reduce consumption can't do so without a stinkin' Hummer trying to drive up our tailpipe. How about two story, 4x4 pickup trucks that will never see even one mile of off road use or be used for transportation in the snow, and can drive over all the other vehicles on the road exept for the two story pickup truck directly in front of it?
It's called luxury tax. The same as placed on boats, yachts and private aircraft. You want to own and operate these, you have to pay for it.
Lack of government intervention in this area seems more indicative to me of the oil companies' sway in Washington than anything we've done thus far in the Middle East.
So hop in, fire that mother up and pedal to the metal, baby !

Hey... They can beam me up when ever.... LOL. Really, it's a technology that is still in it's a bit out of reach. We still need to save this planet. Imagine if we go into the future and nothing was done now to save the earth. Where would we go ? A black whole in space ? Think about this... it kind of makes you wonder .. doesn't it ?
