Do a Google search using
mars close approach
The 2nd top entry returned is:
Mars and Earth pass closer to each other than at any time during the last 60000 years.
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3184157.stm - 36k - 26 Aug 2006
It is wrong because when you click that entry and look at the date of the report at the very top, it is Aug 27 2003.
The BBC have left this report hanging on Cyberspace and kids surfing have found it and assumed, very easily from the title, that is is this year.
All the other misinformation has just ballooned out of this as the kids have emailed their friends, who have emailed their friends, and so on until millions of gullible people have believed it to be true.
If any of the people who have suddenly, inexplicably, gotten an interest in Mars had a real interest, they would have got hold of a book on Mars, or researched some more on the internet, and learned enough in five minutes reading to know that this was misinformation.
