I don't agree with you. There is no reason that a kid needs to have a web cam. As for the myspace, it can go 50/50 - some kids are stupid and give info out and can fall prey to predators, and whether you believe it or not there are TONS of predators out there, and it's not hard to find out where someone lives. Parents are perfectly within their rights to monitor their kids on the computer and not allow them to have a webcam and if they feel strongly, even a myspace.
Kids don't realize it, but it's all in their best interest.

I don't see any reason why kids would need webcams in the first place. It seems to me the main reasons to have a webcam are sexual. I mean, what else do people do with them? It's fine if all parties are adults. Yes, sites like MySpace are very safe IF a person doesn't give out any personal information. But you have to remember that kids are gullible and child predators are very smart. The danger is that predators learn the current teenage/kid lingo, what's popular with them now, etc. so when your kid is chatting with them they think it's another kid. Parents really need to keep their kids educated about this and stay on top of these things. DON'T let your kids have webcams and keep computers in the family/living room where you can keep an eye on what they're chatting about. Most kids are way too naive and trusting.

I don't think its fair that you blame Oprah alone on this. She just brought the issues of myspace and the webcam incident to the attention of all those over protective parents. It was then those parents who decided to allow or not allow their children to have those things because they either didn't trust them enough or didn't want to take any chances.
The following saying holds very true in this particular dillema and that is "Don't shoot the messenger!"
P.S What's the bet that every single person who disagreed with you were parents who either have a. no faith in the intelligence of their own children (they usually blame it on innocence) or b. Have technophobia and are afraid of inventions such as the webcam and thus don't want it around their kids.

Yes I agree, it all comes down to parenting. However society is so big to point the finger at someone else instead. Almost like cutting off the head to cure a headache. Parents need to take more responsibility for their child's actions as well as lifestyle instead of letting society do the work for them.
