Hello Patrick,
You have made the most important observation already ! Learning to play does take a lot of time, depending of course upon exactly what you want to play.
At 17, I graduated from high school and promptly went out and bought a guitar. My father went ballistic and threatened to have me declaired mentally insane, and freeze my bank account. (dear old dad !)
It was 1965 and the military draft was a reality. I joined the USAF, came home and got a job, raised a family, (attended college part time for 15 years), eventually divorced, re-married, re divorced, retired, and now... here I sit at the computer.
I currently own two guitars although I do not play well. My point is, I wish I had spent a lot more time early on, to learn to play. Man, I know you've heard it before, but time flies. You must set some time aside every day to practice. Get a good beginner book, or take a few lessons, and practice about thirty minutes each day. I regret not taking the time...Please take a little time for # 1, (you); and don't be a 59 year old looking at B.B. King and asking, "How does he do that?"

You can learn. Time is not the primal fact but constancy/persistence. You can study 10 or 15 minutes as long you do it everyday.

Practice while on the toilet and you have plenty of time. Takes only 5 minutes a day to get the basics down.

Time is what you make of it. If you don't think you have enough, you don't. If you want to, you will.
