I have tried both ways. It seems like I get more done flowing through the house. My problem is collecting things I don't need. I have thrown away a lot of things and had a lot of yard sales, but still seem to have problems parting with junk. I think this is due to my obsessive compulsive disorder problem known as "hoarding" any suggestions would be welcome!

I conquer one room at a time with 3 boxes. One marked "sell", one marked "give-a-way", and one marked "throw away." Then onto the next room. Then pitch the throw away box, take the give a way box to Goodwill (it's a tax write off) and box up the sell for a garage sale at a later date, after you have enough to have a good garage sale. Take the nicer items to a consignment shop.

I have the same problem. Even though my house is small, I can't seem to efficiently clean it. (This is odd since I have worked as a housekeeper). Sometimes, I feel like just swiping everything, and starting with the bare basics, then add things back slowly till I feel comfortable with things, but not overtly-cluttered. I use to clean room by room, but now I sweep through. I think the room-to-room cleaning is more thorough (though time-consuming). There are the basics, of course, sweeping, mopping, dusting, and washing dishes, making beds, cleaning toilet, etc., which need to be done daily. Other than that, a few things can wait (you're probably thinking: "what else is there"?). I have a small family, so I don't do laundry everyday, or have a ton of dishes to do. My sister has a large house; it's always clean, but I know she has a system, and occasional part-time housekeeping help (especially with the big jobs). Since it's a big house, not every room gets dirty the same time, so that helps. Did I even hit on anything that helped?

I think they both work just as well. It should be a personal thing. House cleaning is a pain in the ***, and however you get it done is best. Personally, I am a flow-er. I just keep plugging along until I'm satisfied. But having said that, I think a large house would be easier to do room by room.

I clean my house one room at a time but what I do is if I have something in the room that I'm cleaning that does not belong there I move it to the next room. Once I've cleaned the room that I started I go to then next room and move stuff out of that room. You finally get everything back in place where it belongs. One Tip do not do laundry and major cleaning on the same day. It causes you to stop and loose focus and you won't want to finish your cleaning.

Yeah - top down works best!

As for parting with the junk, just ask yourself which is better, the stuff or the space the stuff occupies? Since you paid a lot for that space, there really isn't any reason to put junk on it. Save it for the good stuff. Junk belongs in the junkyard, ergo the name.

Houses with less clutter are a lot easier to clean.

i think both ways work.....when i cleaned large houses that were more than one story i would start on one level ..do the kitchen, bathrooms then do the dusting in every room and sweep and mop then head to the next level. In my own home i do one room at a time. Not really sure which way is faster but both work.

I think it's better to clean one or two rooms at a time. However, once or twice a year you can take a lot of time and do the detailed cleansing of the whole house.

P.S. Throw away as much as possible. You feel much better when you don't have things you don't need, and, it makes the maintenance much easier.

I keep a few cleaning chemicals in each room that way if I have a few minutes (like filling my tub or making a microwave meal) I can do touch up, so I don't have to do heavy cleaning and waste a whole day. Baby wipes or Clorox wipes and Windex wipes, are great to keep in each of the rooms for this.
