I don't know how old your are, but your favorite picture of you and him together in a frame with a handmade card would be special.
Spend time with him and tell him how you feel.

My dad has been gone since 2000. I miss him terribly, and I would love to do that with him!

Happy BIrthday to your dad!

I don't know you or your dad (obviously). I have found that people tell you what they want. Is he always losing his glasses? Is his wallet worn out and tattered? A new watch maybe? Did he see something on tv and raise an eyebrow?

Get your father:

up to 50 - A pen, Wallet, monogrammed hankerchief
Over 50 - A monogrammed robe, they are fairly inexpensive and everyone likes personalized stuff. Another thing is a massage. A full body massage does wonders for a person and they run about 50 - 75 depending on where you live and all of that stuff.

Good luck and happy birthday to your dad! Hope that helped

More than anything, I bet he'd like to spend time with you. Take him out to lunch, or to a ball game (or whatever sport he might like). Or take a hike/picnic. Somethjing where the two of you can interact and he can share with you. So, if he's really into science, maybe go to a planetarium, or if he's really into art, go to a museum. Give him the gift of time and the opportunity to learn more about him. He won't be around for ever!

You should get him some sort of pet- like a puppy. My parents totally loosened up and got much happier after getting apuppy; they love him. However, it can go either way with people- he might get tired and pissed about having to take care of a puppy, but on the other hand, (like most people) he might fall in love and have himself a new companion. Dogs are man's best friend (unless he already has one).

Price range?

High end: technology
Medium price: something related to his hobbies or accessories for something he owns (like his car)
Low end: make a card, make a craft item of some sort. Parents always love it when you take the time to make something personalized.

Go to one of those paint it yourself ceramic stores and make him something, just like when you were 8... parents never stop thinking their kids are still kids. He'll love it, no matter how old either one of you is right now.
