1) Be a charming psychopath. That way, you believe you have the right and that convinces everyone else.
2) Have some stupid but strict rules. That weeds out the non compliant, and ensures that only the commited follow you. It also tends to attract those that like self control and denial.
3) Have a strong identity. The neon frock. The sober business suit. Whatever, you need to be identifiable. Setting yourself apart makes your followers feel that they are better than the herd.
4) Have a purpose. It gives your followers the sense that it is all for a reason. Make it something that benefits them and hey, they get to be both right and self righteous!
5) Isolate your sheep from the herd, it makes it harder for them to leave. Tell them to leave their stupid/evil friends and family, take their money (the Barefoot & Pregnant method), especially effective is to get them to issue some public statement - thats very difficult to retract later, because it makes them feel like a tit. eg Scientology Cured My Dyslexia says famous actor.

dunno about the other 4 qualities but i have always found that lining someones palm with several pounds of the queens realm (or whatever your currency is) works a treat!
