went to a party,
And remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink, Mom,
so I had a sprite instead.

I felt proud of myself,
The way you said I would,
that I didn't drink and drive,
though some friends said I should.

I made a healthy choice,
And your advice to me was right.
The party finally ended,
and the kids drove out of sight.

I got int o my car,
Sure to get home in one piece.
I never knew what was coming, Mom,
something I expected least.

Now I'm lying on the pavement,
And I hear the policeman say,
the kid that caused this wreck was drunk,
Mom, his voice seems far away.

My own blood's all around me,
As I try hard not to cry.
I can hear the paramedic say,
this girl is going to die.

I'm sure the guy had no idea,
While he was flying high.
Because he chose to drink and drive,
now I would have to die.

So why do people do it, Mom
Knowing that it ruins lives?
And now the pain is cutting me,
like a hundred stabbing

People are stupid. A lot never think of the effects that will happen not only to them but to others. A girl I wne to school with was killed last year. She and some friends went to a party, got drunk, and drove home. Her friend's boyfriend was driving and she was in the backseat. She was threw out ot the truck, was decapitated when she went through the window. At her funeral, the casket wasn't even open because she had been torn up so badly. She was 19 when this happened. I've read that poem before. I think it's out of Chicken Soup for the Teenage soul.

Thought this sounded like glurge; a search on Snopes.com turned it up in the "Inboxer Rebellion" files---please read their commentary about the NEGATIVE effects of forwarding this sort of thing.

Yes, drunk driving causes a lot of pain to innocent people. But does anyone think that a dedicated party animal or an alcoholic will read a poem like this and say, "gee, really sad poem; I'd not gonna drink and drive from now on"??
Alternative activities, rather transmitting bad poetry: support alcohol-free prom night activities; use parent/teen contracts supporting no drinking and driving (or calling for a cab if drunk); getting really aggressive with DWI/DUI offenders at the first offense, at ALL ages.

Sorry about your friend's injury; as a nurse, drunk drivers are on my list of Not Nice People....
but cheap sentimentality (and Chicken Soup, IMHO, is that) tends to degrade and insult humans, making it a cheap Jerry Springer gimmick.

This poem is indeed sad, teenagers need to be more aware of how damaging driving under the influence of either alcohol or drugs can be, in my school we had a play performed for us, it was incredably effective especially since one of the actresses had lost her sister through drink driving

People drink and drive because they are stupid. My in-laws both drank and drove all the time. Got into a few accidents. But you could not tell them any different. My father in law was the town drunk and my mother in law followed a close second. Their children neglected, left to do what they wanted to. Surprised my husband turned out to be a good man but then I finished raising him.

Im sorry about your friend and hope they recover. I've read the poem before in Chicken Soup for the Teenage soul. People need to stop driving drunk and think about their actions before they harm themselves or anyone else.

I've become immune to this poem. The first 15 times I read it, I thought it was sad, but now it's not even worth reading all of it. People shouldn't drink and drive, it's as simple as that.

Because they choose to go along with what their friend s are Doing So they can "Fit In" and its really hard to turn the cheek and say no sometimes, but, thats how life goes when ur a teen

Yes it is sad. I also read this out of the chicken soup for the teenage soul book. Most people do it cause they are ignorant to the fact that they could kill themselves or someone else.
