We live in NV, bought a 2006 Chevy Colorado last month from CA because they gave us the "best" price. They KNEW i was shoping around, I told them I wanted their bottom line price, everything included. They told me with taxes and fees what our final price would be. Well, when I was getting money out of the bank for the down payment, my boyfriend was signing the papers (the vehicle was delivered by an old guy, who just showed my bf where to sign). Like an idiot, my boyfriend signed all the papers showing him what the payment would be, how many months, etc. Well, he went to register the vehicle yesterday and was told by the DMV that we hadn't payed taxes on the vehicle and now owe $2000.00. I was FLOORED and completely pissed. Sure enough, on the contract it says "sales tax... N/A". I am LIVID that they screwed us over. Is that NORMAL practice NOT to include sales tax? This was our first car and we had NO idea what to look for in the contract... is there ANYTHING we can do?

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do about it.You will have to pay sales tax on a vehicle where you plan to register it.I live in New york, and have bought cars all over the Northeast,no taxes paid until i register the car. Some (but verrrrry few) dealers will pay the taxes for you & include same in the total price of the car. That will show up on your contract. The dealers can't lie about this,or cheat you out of it, HOWEVER ; if they know you are unaware of this, they may try to trump up the price in other ways. This is what sounds like may have happened to you.I'd suggest looking over your contract very closely, or have someone (a lawyer) do it for you.If there is a discrepency there may be a way out of it,but the odds are slim since BF signed the contract. This is assuming he's on the title to the car as well as you. Just pay the tax and chalk it up to experience.

Sounds like you learned a hard lesson.

One way or another, you are going to always have to pay sales tax on any new vehicle. As you learned, its a lot of money. Out of state sales will never include your local sales tax.

BTW, here in Nebraska we get hit twice: Sales tax when you purchase, plus personal property tax EVERY YEAR. Getting plates renewed on a nicer, newer can can run hundreds and hundreds every year. Ugh.

I'm sorry, but there's nothing you can do at this point but suck it up and pay the tax. Wish there was a better answer. Try to enjoy the new truck anyway!

I'm not sure that there is much of anything you can do, except pay the tax. In some states where merchandise is sold "out of state", vendors don't have to collect taxes. Unfortunatly, Nevada will still want the taxes on your purchase.

Here in Florida, if you buy a vehicle in another state, and bring it here to register it, they hit you with "impact fees". Not much different from your situation, I suppose.

Perhaps you could explore returning the automobile to the dealer, and by one in your local area, where the dealer would collect the taxes.

Keep in mind, that the best deal, isn't always the "best" deal.

You do not live in California, so a California dealer is not required to collect tax. They told you the cost from them including all taxes and fees that they are required to collect. You owe the tax to Nevada.

The contract was explicit. They did not collect tax, because you did not owe any in California. You can not blame the dealer for you not reading the contract!!!

You can pay the tax you owe or not register the car!!

Sorry
