He will wake up in the middle of the night with terrible thigh and grion cramps. He is 3-4 times a week athlete and does stretch before and after. He does drink a lot of water also. Any other suggestions on what he can do to prevent these? Is there anything inparticular he can add to his diet to aid in these cramps? Any ideas on what are causing these cramps? They seem to be very painful for him!

Calcium supplements and getting the top sheet off his feet.

I found out about the calcium supplements quite by accident, and they do work. I prefer the soft chews (they have chocolate, chocolate mint and strawberry flavors), since they are not as gag-o-matic as Tums. If he should get a cramp, have him eat as many as he can in as short a time as possible, four to six of them, if possible, wash down with water. Better yet, take them in a more controlled situation before bed. There is scientific basis for this as IONIZED calcium must be available in order for the muscle to relax, and most of the calcium in our bloodstream is bound to proteins, so you need that extra little bolus to provide the ionized, or unbound calcium to be available.

If he goes right back to sleep, his mouth will taste a little metallic in the morning, but goes away with water, or coffee, or whatever your beverage of choice is.

As a medical professional, I have heard this "old wives tale" that really does tend to be true. I can't explain it, many doctors will verify that it works, but NO ONE can explain why (you can even search about this online)...but try placing a bar of soap between the fitted the sheets and the flat sheet. I told my own father about it and he said "Oh, c'mon"...but he tried it anyway and he can't believe it, but he hasn't had a leg cramp in months! Try a bar of ivory.

Have him eat a banana or drink some orange juice. If this solves it, then his leg cramps are due to a potassium deficiency.

Low levels of potassium are the leading cause of muscle cramps.
