First of all, I'm quite sure that it's PapalE (e, not i). I googled his name and checked Wikipedia.
As of Sept 8, 2004, he was (and perhaps, still is) the regional director of marketing and senior account executive for higher- education marketing at Sallie Mae.
The 54 year old die-hard Eagles fan had never played football in college and only one year in high school. While teaching at his alma mater, Interboro High in Philadelphia, he joined a former minor league football team - the Philadelphia Bells.
Then Eagles coach Dick Vermeil was having a private workout and invited the 30 year old Papale to attend. He made the team and lasted for three years (1976-1978), being voted Special Teams Captain and "Man of the Year" by the Eagles in 1978 for his many charitable activities. A shoulder injury ended his career in 1979. He was a key contributor on the special teams coverage unit and also saw some action as a wide receiver.
After retiring from th NFL, he worked as a radio and TV broadcaster for eight years, then became a commercial mortgage broker.
Papale is a cancer survivor and donates a lot of time to charities dealing with cancer and is a national spokesman for colorectal cancer prevention.
