Dang, Skulls are evil... I have one, but it is in use. Most young adults are invincible and will live for ever. It isn't until maturity catches up with them and their own mortality starts to stare back at them in the mirror that they appreciate life. Some of the goth group is already there. The acceptance of death being around the corner can make them feel life is more precious.

The good news.. It's just a phase and they will grow out of it once they see they can't make above minimum wage being too much of a nonconformist.

The first thing I thought of is the Mexican Day of the Dead(see the link below). It's festive, not morbid or sad.
Second, skulls aren't evil. They are a symbol of mortality, which is realistic. My husband likes them; I don't. He uses them as decorations for Halloween. I would personally never get a skull as a tattoo, though I have 9 other tattoos. I don't think most people who like them put much thought into why they like them, it's just a sort of decoration to most of them, I'd imagine.

Is it only human skulls that you are asking about, or skulls in general.

I have been collecting various animal skulls for years. In fact, one wall of my home is decorated with them. I am not a Goth, nor am I evil, nor am I attempting to "invoke dark forces". I'm just you average nature lover who happens to think that skulls are interesting.

Me and my husband like skulls. We're not Goth or evil. We just think they're cool.

Death is a part of life. Without death there is no point of life. Would you have goals and look to acheive them if you knew you were going to live forever? Probably not. Celebrating death instead in mourning it is just as important as celebrating life. Without one, the other cannot exist.............

Why is it that the only bone in the body that conjures the image of death is the skull? Your skull protects your brain from being crushed and made useless. People can't function without their brain...........never mind.

Because we all have to die sometime. Mexico's day of the dead is nothing but skull decorations everywhere.
