My band is in high school and is pretty good. We on average write 2 to 3 songs a month and sometimes even more. People say we sound similar to the Fray, and Ben Folds Five. We have a pianist who has been playing for 9 years, a guitarist who has been playing for 2-3 years and sings, a drumer who has been playing for 5 or 6 years, and a bass player who has been playing for 3 years. We are currently looking for a violinist for a new adition to our band. We have a pretty good amount of songs in our group and have played live for people we dont know 4 times. The most we have played for was around 700 people. Our band has been together since January 06. We have played for people we know about 5 times. And then every month, we play for my church sunday night. We are use to playing in front of large crowds but want to become known.

Forget all the agent rubbish, they are useless and will steal any money you DO make (and believe me, being a professional musician is HARD WORK). Get some serious gigs in venues that do regular live music, and establish a fanbase there. If you're not old enough to play in bars (I don't know what the licensing laws are like in the states, but presumably nobody under 21 is allowed in) then look elsewhere. Perhaps if one of your friends has a large garage or something you could start a monthly gig there, and get local bands to play alongside you, for a share of your door takings.

The best way to get your band big is to play as many gigs as possible, and get your name well known, and establish a large fanbase. It is very unlikely to get signed by recording yourself and sending the CD to agencies - 99% of the time they don't listen to them. However, myspace is a huge asset to unsigned musicians. Record your best 4 songs (try to do it as well as possible) and MAKE A MYSPACE PAGE. Leave links to it in as many places as possible, especially places where musicians go - the more hits you get the more likely you are to be spotted.

Don't give up either - it is very hard to stand out from all the other bands out there, I've had a band for 3 years and we've never really got anywhere, but we still keep trying.

Myspace and Purevolume. Also, you can add bigger bands on myspace and leave comments asking people to listen to your music. Ill listen to you if you get one.
