It is much harder for people to just steal these items from the store if they are in these pain in the *** packages. I know that they are annoying, but in the long run it is better for the store protection wise.

I know exactly the type of packaging you mean - it's not just computer accessories either. I normally resort to cutting the package in half with a pair of scissors & trying to avoid damaging the contents.
