I am a hispanic male that owns a well established swim pool and landscape business since 1989 just North of Los Angeles, when I bid jobs to white people it seems that I never get taken seriously and rarely get the job, they always hire the white contractor instead of me even though I have been in business longer and do outstanding work. Sometimes I get funny looks, and sometimes outright rude attitudes, one white woman asked me where is the boss man? her eyes almost popped out her skull when I told her that I was the owner, she assumed I was a day laboror.

Well guess there are a couple things you can do...try and focus your attention more on the hispanic community...or do nothing and prove your worth by your work...you have to be doing something right if you've been doing business since 1989...another suggestion I would personally have is move to Canada....we don't have that kinda stuff here....(I am Canadian born, half white half Pakistani myself everyone always thinks i'm Hispanic) GOOD LUCK! but please don't try and put people white men, hispanic men, black men...into stereotypes...one never represents a whole culture....you know that yourself...remember you are the owner, not the labourer...because one white man has a problem doesn't mean all do....CHEERS!

dude, i'm sorry to hear that. not all white ppl are like that, but under the circumstances that's going on in the US right now.....the white man is pissed! Let me put it this way......alot of these ppl you're dealing with....their families came over as immigrants too. but the difference is they learned to speak the language and they made sure they were legal. they busted their asses so their future generations could have what they have now.

I am not saying you don't work hard because it seems that you do if you own your own business and such. And I am sure that you came to america just like my forefather's did....for a better life. but it's your ppl right now that are hoping the boarder illegally and taking the working class Americans jobs...that's what pissing the white folk off. Also, not to mention the Hispanic politicians in CA claiming they are going to take over the US by population by raising the Hispanic birth rate and promoting boarder hoping.

So because of a few bad apples in from your culture.....your gonna have to suffer. Sorry dude, I know it sucks but that's just the way it is

If your prices are the same or lower, and you have pictures of your work and references I can talk to(which is the same I'd ask of any contractor I'd be doing service with), why wouldn't I hire you?
You shouldn't have to, but maybe when you meet a prospective client for the first time you could give them a business card and introduce yourself as the owner of the company.

No. No one wants to be, really, unless they have hatred passed down to them from their parents, I think. If your parents pass it down and you care about them, I think you stand a chance of living your life as a bigot. My parents were very open and caring for people of all races. The worst part about that is the number of kids I went to school with while I was growing up who had been taught the extreme opinions like: all Blacks steal and other ridiculous fables born out of ignorance and fear like that.

So just be careful when you say: "White Man" when you ask that question....because it sounds like you mean all of us and just as you are a good and successful person...who happens to be Hispanic...I am a someone who has friends and family that I care about that cross over racial lines...and I happen to be white.

I'm a white male, and I like to think I'm not bigoted. I view myself as inclusive and tolerant. That said, I know that I have biases and stereotypes. I could even see myself having the same surprised reaction your white woman had when she found out you were the owner.

So, we need to keep working at this. I'll try to be aware of my prejudices. You keep on pointing this out and educating us.

Deep down inside? Who knows. I'm not the type to inspect my self deep down inside.

However, on the outside I respect skill.

There are so many illegals in California now that is an easy (if wrong) assumption to make. That's one good reason that Legal immigrants should be supporting laws against it.

No. Bigotry is too shallow to exist deep down inside anyone.

I am white and I am not a bigot. People should be judged on an individual basis and not by their ethnic background. The people who judge you by your skin color or ethnic background should be ashamed.
