You should definitely read "Sloppy firsts" and "Second Helpings", by Megan McCafferty. "Boy meets boy" by David Levithan is really good too. Some other great teen books are "The year of secret assignments" and "Gingerbread" but I'm not sure who the authors are. There is also the "Princess diaries" series by Meg Cabot. The movie Princess Diaries was taken from the books and they are really not like the movies. They are a lot better. Have fun reading!

Sarah Dessen is a great YA author. Her newest: Just Listen. Personal favorite: The Truth About Forever.
Joan Bauer is another excellent choice. I love all her work (as I do Dessen) but my personal favorite of Bauer's is Hope Was Here.
Laurie Halse Anderson has written several books, but by far her best YA book is Speak.
Sonya Sones is great for a light read. My favorite of hers is What My Mother Doesn't Know.
Stephenie Meyer is probably one of my favorite YA authors of all time. Her book Twilight is so incredible. It's a "must read" book in my opinion. New Moon is the sequel.
Scott Westerfeld is another great YA writer. So Yesterday and the Uglies trilogy deal with teen issues like popularity, conformity vs. "being yourself", self-esteem, etc. But he also writes some other titles...like his vampire series.
Caroline B. Cooney writes a lot of different genres in YA. My personal favorite is HIT THE ROAD.
There are a lot of great fantasy writers too. Some of my favorites are Shannon Hale, Rick Riordan, and Robin McKinley.

I think it depends on the style that the teen likes to read. If he/she like sci fi, or fantasy type novels then you can go with J.R.R Tolkien, Brian Jaqcues. If he/she reads in a higher level there are books by Nicholas Sparks, or Nicholas Evans that are really good. There is always the horror or mystery type genres, which would be anywhere from Anne Rice to Stephen king. It really depends on what there preferred genre is, and what there reading level and imagination level is.If the teen is into just about anything there is also R.L. Stine, Lurlene McDaniel, the list goes on go to a local library and klook in the teen section.

There are a lot of good ones out there. The best one I've found was King Fortis the Brave by LaMontagne and Snyder. It's about a pair of twins that are pulled into a magical land where they find themselves caught in the middle of a battle for control of the realm. The boy twin, Rodney, is mistaken for King Fortis, a King Arthur-like figure that is to someday return in the time of the land's greatest need. It's really a great book full of humor and adventure. I recommend it to my students all the time and have had students that really hate to read come back and tell me how much they love it.

To add to the others, I like the series about The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, by Ann Brashares. The first book had a movie with Amber Tamblyn, which was quite entertaining. The books are funny, sad, and thoughtful, and help you know what friendship is all about.
