We did a trip down the washington and oregon coast a few years back. If you go when it's clear, it's quite spectacular. Try to make it to Cannon Beach your first day and stay at a place on the water. The Stephanie Inn and the Ocean Lodge are amazing places to stay.
You can then drive leisurely down the oregon coast. Consider stopping in Gold Beach. You are very near the famous dunes of Orgeon and in a gorgeous sunset location.
From there, you can drive to Mendocino if you like wine. Not much night life, the wine is really really fun. If that's not your thing, continue on to San Francisco. Spend a few nights there explornig the city and the nightlife. If your hotel has a concierge, they should be able to point you in the direction of clubs and bars.
You can then take a drive to Monterey. Be sure to make a stop at Lover's Point in Pacific Grove and spend some time wandering the city. It's truely beautiful.
From there, you are 6-10 hours from LA, depending on traffic. Stopping points can be Santa Barbara, where if you catch it during the schoolyear, you may be able to hit some college bars and clubs.
From LA, you are 3-5 hours from Vegas, so you could always go out there for a few nights and then take your choice of routes back to the 5 for your trip home.
Good luck to you! : )

The obvious choice is the Coast Highway especially the Southern Oregon Coast and the Redwoods. South of San Francisco is Quail Lodge, Carmel and then on to Santa Barbara.

I'd recommend driving down the length of the coast.
Not only are there several small beach communties on the way, there's also Portland, San Francisco, Santa Crus, LA and San Diego to hit for your nightlife.
Highway one is one of the most awe-inspiring drives during the day and there are lots of place to pull over and catch a great sunset and a bite to eat.
Have a great trip, where ever you do decide to travel.

I would take Hwy 101 south, as far as you can until you have to head back and then take I-5 on the way back. The Oregon coast is exceptionally beautiful, northern Cali is great, and you can stop in San Fran to party.
Have a great trip...I'm totally jealous!
