2 reasons. Poor research and they get caught up in the bidding war.

There may be several reasons why people pay more. Here are some (not in any particular order)

I live in a small town. I don't have easy access to large shopping malls. Sometimes I will pay more on ebay because it actually comes to less money overall because I don't have to travel several hours to acquire the item in question.

Some people are willing to pay more for the convenience of having something shipped to their home.

Some people get carried away with the "winning" aspect of auctions.

Some people are collectors of certain things and will pay top dollar to acquire a certain piece needed for the collection.

I hope this has given you some legitimate reasons why people may pay more on ebay. However, overall, I have found some good bargains on ebay.

Somethings you can not find in a store close to you. Also its easier to just get it on ebay than having to travel so far to go get it and fight with other people. You know you got it and its on the way. Also, some people may not have any way to get out to shop.

Probably being that they don't like to shop in stores, and they may like the luxury of shopping from there own homes.
May actually save money with the cost of gas and the time it takes to get to the stores.

Most people have enough sense not to overbid on a product. But I suppose if someone wants something badly enough, can't find it locally, and they are willing to pay more... they will overbid just to get it.

Then there are those who get caught up in the bidding war and will compete till they're broke.
