I would like something affordable and reliable. It doesn't have to be something with out of this world firepower, it just has to get the job done.

My wife wants one for home protection.

No, we do not have kids.

Okay, you say you have a wife in the house. And that you're wanting the firearm for home protection. Which means that you don't really see yourself carrying and shooting this thing every day. So the last thing you should do is go get a cannon. What I mean is, that while calibers like .44 Magnum and .50 Action Express have incredible penetration and ballistic numbers, they aren't practical if you're not comfortable and familiar with the firearm. For you and your wife to have something dependable, I'd go with no smaller than a .38 Special. Personally, I'd lean towards a .357 Magnum revolver (you can always load .38s in it) or a .40 S&W semi-auto. The .40 would have more rounds, but the revolver is less likely to lock up after being left in a drawer or safe for awhile. If you're going with a new pistol, take a look at Ruger or Taurus. They're inexpensive, but great quality and a really good customer service if you do have a problem. Learn the weapon, test fire it periodically, and make sure everyone in the house is familiar with it, your rules, and where it's at.

iam against guns-LOL..but you might want to consider the 9mm glock pistol..it is easy to load, and carry.it is used by law enforcement all across the united states..and should be a very reliable gun for protection..

I would ask your local gun dealer for his opinion, on a gun for "home protection."
