I am taking the GRE in October and applying to graduate schools. What were your experiences taking the GRE? Was it easier or more difficult than you expected. I would also like advice on getting accepted to grad school. Should I contact the professors or department representatives beforehand?

If you take the GRE, make sure that you bring alcohol.

Regarding the GRE:
Get a prep book, like Barron's, or Princeton Review, or Kaplan. Take the practice tests, find your strengths and weaknesses, and work on your weaknesses.

Regarding grad schools:
It is common practice to contact the directors of graduate studies before you apply, but ONLY if you have questions that cannot be answered by looking at their website, or by reading the materials they provide. For example, if you have questions about how many students are currently in the program, what their PhD placement rate is, what a teaching assistantship entails, etc., then contact the DGS.

The GRE wasn't that difficult if you take time to review before taking it.
As for getting accepted, you should absolutely contact professors at the schools of your choice. That way you can find out how your interests fit in with the school, since otherwise they might not take you. This is something I learned from a failed application.

If it's just the general test you are taking, I'd say you should practice beforehand.

The math was easier than I thought, but the verbal was definitely harder. You need to know a lot of vocabulary.

The writing section can be practiced more than you think. On the testing services website, they have a (long) list of possible essay topics. It really helped me to read through at least a few of the things on that list and think about what I would write if I was given that essay topic.

dont do it.....whatever you do....it is a terrible test and will only saduce you to learn things that are of no importance to you. It will only open up doorways to new opportunites that you might not even liek....just forget about it. there are many happy mcdonalds managers out there!!! and they got that far without there GRE!!!
